Über mich
My name is Nicolas Wohlleben and I compose music.
Since I started playing the piano when I was nine years old, I was always fascinated by the nature of music – it’s this somewhat abstract art form, painted on a canvas made out of time. Like any other art, music is a language of emotion, it’s subjective by definition. Nevertheless, it is also subject to rules, conventions and techniques that were formed since the beginning and which will always keep evolving.
These underlying principles have piqued my interest in music at first. It’s comparable to figuring out how to understand a language: first, you catch words and phrases, then you begin to make out the relationships between them and their possible combinations. If you keep learning, you will be able to express yourself and understand others.
This is true for any art.
The transmission of emotion is especially interesting if you combine different art forms to convey a greater idea, as in film, for instance. The way music can influence, enhance, invert or explain the emotional subcontext of a moving picture is still incredible to me. I’ve been lucky enough to work on the music for several short films by now, teaching me a lot about the process and the obstacles that come with it, as well as the synergy film and music can create.
I assisted an orchestral recording session of the London Symphony Orchestra at Abbey Road Studios in February 2018 where I gained insight into the professional workflow. In September 2018, I produced the music for the marketing campaign of the Digital Festival hosted by the city of Nuremberg. I created the title sound for the Germanisches Nationalmuseum, the largest museum of cultural history in the German-speaking region, in July 2019. My music is featured on commercial work all around the world. Regarding Germany, you can hear it in campaigns of major companies such as Commerzbank and Deutsche Bahn.
Here I am, still in the learning process of the musical language – and I guess one never finishes. Yet, I hope you find meaning in my music. It doesn’t matter if you feel motivated, fascinated or touched by it, or if you just like the sound of a particular piece.
If you feel anything, it works.
